With the increasing demand for high-speed and high bandwidth in the era of big data, there is an urgent need for a new type of product as the main transmission medium for high-performance computing and data centers. Therefore, the development of optical communication transmission rate has also increased. AOC active optical cables provide excellent solutions for the high-speed, high-density, low-cost, and low-power requirements of short distance data centers in optical interconnect products.

What is Active Optic Cable?

AOC, short for Active Optical Cable, is an active optical cable, also known as an active optical cable. AOC is a transmission line that includes an electro-optical conversion chip and an electro-optical conversion chip, and transmits high-speed signals through optical fibers.

It is an eight channel, pluggable, parallel, fiber QSFP dual density for 2x100G Ethernet applications. This optical module is a high-performance module used for short distance multi-channel data communication and interconnection applications. It integrates 8 data channels in each direction with a bandwidth of 8×25.78125Gbps. Each channel can transmit 70m using OM3 fiber or 100m using OM4 fiber. These modules are designed to use a multimode fiber system with a nominal wavelength of 850nm.

Introduction to 200G AOC

1. There are two types of 200G AOC: QSFP-DD AOC and QSFP56 AOC, both with wavelengths of 850nm. The QSFP56 package has four transmitting and receiving ports, but each channel has a transmission rate of up to 56Gbps, and the modulation method is PAM4. The QSFP-DD package has eight transmit and receive ports, each channel has a transmission rate of 28Gbps, and the modulation method is NRZ. The 200G AOC is applied to 200G Ethernet with a transmission distance of 1-100 meters.

2. 200G AOC to 2x 100G AOC, with one end connected to one 200G optical module and one end connected to two 100G optical modules, with a maximum transmission rate of 212.5Gbps. The power consumption of the 200G optical module is less than 4W, and the power consumption of the 100G optical module is less than 2.5W. Mainly used for 200G to 2-way 100G Ethernet branch links in data centers. 200GAOC direct connection means that both ends are 200G.

3. The 200G AOC to 4x 50G AOC uses 8-channel full duplex active optical cables, with one end connected to one 200G optical module and the other end connected to four 50G modules, with a maximum speed of up to 206.25Gbps. The power consumption of 200G is less than 4W, and the maximum power consumption of each 50G module is less than 1.5W. Mainly used for 200G to 4-way 50G Ethernet branch links in data centers.

Working principle of 200G AOC

The working principle of AOC is not significantly different. The electrical signal is input through the A-terminal, and is converted into a specific wavelength optical signal through an electro-optical conversion device. The optical signal is modulated and coupled before being input into a transmission optical cable; After the optical signal reaches the B end, the photoelectric detection device detects the optical signal and amplifies, processes, and converts it to output the corresponding electrical signal.
