SAS also known as Serial Attached SCSI, is a new generation of SCSI technology that, like the popular Serial ATA (SATA) hard drives, uses serial technology to achieve higher transmission speeds and improves internal space by shortening connection lines. SAS is a brand new interface developed after parallel SCSI interfaces.
The SAS interface is designed to improve the performance, availability, and scalability of the storage system, as well as provide compatibility with SATA hard drives.

SFF-8639
SFF-8639 is the latest connector design for connecting MultiLink SAS drives or PCle drives (including hard drives and SSD drives).
SFF-8639 is a revised version of SFF-8680, which is a 29 pin 2-channel SAS drive interface. SFF-8639 U.2 is a 68 pin driver interface connector with higher signal quality, capable of supporting 12Gb/s SAS and Gen 3 x4 PCle or PCI Express NVMe. The SFF-8639 connector can be integrated into the PCB “docking backplane” of multiple drives or into a single drive “T-Card” adapter.
The SFF-8639 U2 connector has a total of 6 high-speed signal paths, but SAS and PCle specifications can only use up to 4 channels at any time.
It complies with the latest 12Gb/s SAS 3.0 specifications, as well as x4 Gen3 PCle and SSD Form Factor V 1.0.
SFF-8482
SFF-8482 is a connector design used to connect SAS drives, SAS hard drives, and SAS SSD drives. SFF-8482 is a 29 pin connector with a plastic body and is configured with 15 pins to support the power requirements of the drive; (2) 7 sets of pins are used to transmit SAS data signals.
SFF-8482 supports the connection between 2 SAS ports (channels) and drives. SFF-8482 can be integrated into the PCB “docking” backplane of multiple drives and installed on a single drive “T-Card” adapter.
