FTTx (Fiber To The x) is a general term for fiber optic access technology in fiber optic communication, which refers to the use of fiber optic cables instead of traditional copper wires to directly transmit broadband signals to user terminals or near buildings. “x” represents the destination of fiber optic lines (such as homes, offices, roadsides, etc.), aiming to provide high-speed, stable, and reliable network access services. ‌

 

Definition and Common Types

FTTx is a general term for fiber optic access technology, which improves network speed and stability by bringing fiber closer to users, reducing reliance on traditional metal media. Its core components include Optical Line Terminal (OLT), Optical Network Unit (ONU), and Optical Distribution Network (ODN).

 

Common types include:

  • FTTH (Fiber to the Home): Fiber is directly connected to home users, providing the highest bandwidth and low latency. ‌
  • FTTB (Fiber to Building): Fiber optic cables are extended to buildings and then distributed to users through local area networks, suitable for multi household scenarios. ‌
  • FTTC (Fiber to the Curb): Fiber optic cables are laid to the roadside junction box and finally connected to users using copper wires for short distances. ‌
  • FTTO (Fiber to the Office): Designed specifically for enterprises, with fiber optic direct access to office environments. ‌

Other types such as FTTD (Fiber to Desktop) and FTTP (Fiber to Premises) also belong to the FTTx system. ‌

 

Advantages and Applications

FTTx technology has high bandwidth, low loss, and strong anti-interference capabilities, supporting applications such as high-definition video and remote work, and is the mainstream solution for broadband access. ‌
